Every day, those of us who are dedicated to the audiovisual we encounter terms, concepts, technologies and acronyms that can make us doubt. We know that such technology is advancing steadily, by leaps and bounds, and therefore we can never stop learning.

There are times when acquiring this new knowledge, necessary for our daily lives, is not an easy task, since the information is in other languages or explained in a way that only an engineer would be able to understand it.

Lately one of the most heard concepts is HDR, which enters strongly in our world, making its way among the existing ACES, HFR, 4K, UHD, gamuts and color spaces, DCI standards, Rec. 709. You may be thinking ” please somebody stop this!“, but unfortunately and fortunately we can’t make this wheel stop, so we might as well get on it.

Last year at this time, we made available for free download a 4K Guide that delved into all these issues with the intention of shedding some light on the subject. Now, we are happy to announce the arrival of the “4K Guide 709 Version 2“where we have included the latest news concerning HDR and cameras in the last year. In addition, we have decided to make it available online, so you can access it at any time.

It is difficult to understand what are the real implications of all this framework in our work and what relationships are established between one thing and another. With this website we have set out to provide an updated overview of Ultra High Definition (Ultra HD or UHD) production technology and the foundations on which it is based.

We believe and hope that this Guide will be of great help to both professional and student level, as it covers from basic terms to the deepening of more complex issues. To do this, if you enter the web, you will see that there is a division by sections that begins by clarifying certain concepts such as spatial and temporal resolution or the wonderful world of codecs and formats that causes so many headaches. Once this base is established, as well as the direct relationship between some contents and others, we move on to work processes such as capture, storage, post-production systems and broadcasting.

The new “Guide 4K 709 Version 2” has been developed by Luis Ochoa (colorist, workflow designer and director of Red709 and 709 MediaRoom) and Francisco Utray (professor of Audiovisual Communication at the University Carlos III of Madrid and member of the research group TECMERIN). Although they have been the main authors, it must be said that they have also had the collaboration of renowned professionals such as Damián Ruiz Coll, Julio Gómez, Daniel Pérez and Fernando Alfonsín; who have contributed their grain of sand by directly writing some chapters and sharing their long experience and knowledge.

Of course, Cristina Simón, in charge of the layout and design of the new page, should also be mentioned.

This is the link through which you will be able to access the “4K 709 Version 2 Guide“and start getting into 4K and Ultra HD. As a complementary method of help, you can also download the 4K Codec and Camera Tables that you will find in our “Downloads” section.

In 709 Media Room we always try that our actions are not unidirectional, but to generate relationships between users and between all of us we can help each other to improve. Therefore, if after reading the Guide you have any recommendations for future versions, we encourage you to make your proposals.
