Would you like to practice your editing techniques and be eligible to win different prizes? Then you have all summer to prepare your montage and submit it to the “90to5 Editing Challenge” contest.
Aimed essentially at students and people who want to improve their skills, the “90to5 Editing Challenge” consists of choosing a film and reducing it to 5 minutes.
There are two ways to participate. The first is to keep the original story, extracting its essence, and turning it into a short film, to win the “Best Edit Award“. The second option is to use the material to create a completely new and different story to the film in question, and win the “Fun Edit Award“.
In order for the montages to be shown online, the films must be in the public domain, i.e. under a Creative Commons (CC) license, except for CC-ND (“no derivative works”), which means that the creator does not want his or her work to be modified.
In these lists you can find many of these movies. There are more outside of them, you just have to make sure that they have no copyrights attributed to them and that they comply with these conditions.
There are also platforms that offer public domain movies for free and legal download:
- Public Domain Flicks
- The Internet Archive
- Public Domain Torrents
- Free Movies Cinema
- Moviesfoundonline
- Emol Entertainment Magazine
- Openculture
In order for the montage to be valid, it must have a final length between 1:00 and 5:50 minutes, as well as be in original version (if the spoken language is not English, it must have English subtitles). In this page you have all the conditions of participation, where you will find the valid delivery formats, the name that the file must have, its resolution, size, etc.
In order to improve the assemblies, positive comments and constructive criticism will be accepted once they have been uploaded to the web. Thus, updated and improved versions will be uploaded once a month.
There are several prizes (material and monetary) and, although some of them are chosen by vote of the public and the participants themselves, most of them are awarded by a professional jury. Here you can see them all.
No entry fee is required and the deadline for submission is October 15. Here you have all the information available about the contest, we encourage all those interested to choose a film and participate!
