Sony has just announced the launch of its latest wide-angle lens, the Sony FE 20mm F1.8 G. This E-mount lens for full-frame cameras joins Sony’s collection of G-range lenses. This time it is a compact and lightweight lens capable of delivering high-resolution images.
Sony’ s new wide-angle prime offers full-frame quality and resolution thanks to Sony’s new optical design. It features two advanced aspherical (AA) elements that maintain resolution throughout the image even at the maximum F 1.8 aperture. To these aspherical elements, 3 ultra-low dispersion glass elements have also been added to faithfully reproduce point light sources, avoid chromatic aberrations and minimize sagittal flare.
As a characteristic of Sony G lenses, the wide-angle lens can boast naturalness of illuminated areas and smooth, fine bokeh. The minimum focusing distance in autofocus mode is only 0.19m, which is reduced to 0.18 in manual mode. This makes it a good choice for selfieshots or even close-ups, as the spherical aberration of the wide-angle has also been controlled.
Being a very versatile and lightweight lens, it is a good choice for use on stabilizers. It is light, with only 373 grams and compact, which helps freedom of movement for both photography and video. It has an improved mechanical system, which gives it more stability and speed. For this Sony has added two extreme Dynamic (XD) linear motors that allow you to capture at high speeds or follow moving objects with precision and fluidity.
As for the design of the lens controls Sony has thought of the users to make the operation quick and easy. It features an aperture ring, focus, has a button to quickly switch between manual or auto focus mode and focus lock button. However, the latter is assignable via the camera menu. It is also a fluorine-coated sealed lens that prevents water and dust from entering so that you can work with it under any circumstances.
We do not have an exact launch date but we do know that it will be marketed from March 2020 and that it will be priced at approximately €1,100.
