Avid has updated its editing, compositing, color correction and graphics creation system, releasing Avid DS 11, the latest version of the software. Its main new features include support for both formats and hardware, audio enhancements, and integration with Avid controllers.
Avid Artist Color, for color correction, and Avid Artist Transport, for navigation and editing, are the company’s two controllers that are now integrated with Avid DS 11 to accelerate workflows and achieve greater accuracy.
Several new supports have been included in this software update. In terms of formats, support for MXF Long-GOP files (such as XDCAM) has been introduced, eliminating the conversion process; and DNxHD 444, allowing users to edit and view files compressed with this codec in real time. In addition, by supporting Open EXR and TIFF DCDM formats, the system now supports HDR (high dynamic range) images.
Support for cameras, such as the RED Epic and RED Scarlet, and third-party hardware has also been included. In the latter case, AJA KONA 3G cards are supported, as well as any other hardware already supported in Media Composer and Symphony.
In the previous version, the maximum number of audio channels that could be captured and mixed was 8. In this version it has been increased to 16 channels of embedded audio. Up to 16 channels can also be sent through AFE from Media Composer.
The company has not only focused on including new media, but also on improving the internals of the system. An example of this is the ability to send high-resolution (2D) sequences directly from Media Composer 6 or Symphony 6. An option has also been added to customize the size of source generators and visual effects (for graphics generation); and another to mix operations on the timeline for one or more clips.
This latest version, DS also integrates with Avid Interplay and Avid ISIS, content management and shared storage systems.
Avid DS 11 is now available for $9,999 (in addition to the DS license, it also includes a Media Composer license). To upgrade from a previous version you will have to pay $4,999. Here you have all the features of the system. Here you can download a 30-day trial version (although it is still the previous version, 10.5).
