AEC and Drago BS organize “Cinematography and HDR”.

Now that HDR seems to be on everyone’s lips, the AEC, Spanish Association of Directors of Photography, together with Drago BS, are organizing a series of informative events to bring this concept closer to all professionals.

More and more is known about the workflows and needs in HDR productions, but doubts still arise. Therefore, the AEC has promoted a series of Masterclasses for active members of the Association that will serve to raise awareness of the basics and more theoretical and technical aspects of HDR, as well as the latest developments.

The first one was an online masterclass in webinar format “Cinematography and HDR” to introduce the subject and explain the theoretical basics of HDR. In charge of this webinar was Luis Ochoa, senior colorist and director of color and workflows at Drago Broadcast Services.

To put into practice what has been learned in the theoretical part, a second part has been prepared completely practical on a set. This day will serve to see live and with models the aspects of shooting in HDR: light, makeup, how the results can vary depending on the camera and lenses used or viewing monitors on set. The practice will have several different shooting sets with the directors of photography Juan Luis Cabellos AEC and Jose Luis Pecharromán AEC in charge, accompanied by third year students of the ECAM.

Following the flow of a production, the third part of these days will take place in the color room Backlight to see how it works and how the footage responds, compare different results and see how the signal responds. This practice will also be led by senior colorist Luis Ochoa. There the results will be tested in HDR on the Sony OLED X300 Grade 1 HDR monitor and in SDR on OLED monitor and cinema projection screen.

These 3 practices will take place in Madrid, Barcelona and Bilbao in order to reach as many ACS members as possible thanks to the collaboration of the Escac in Barcelona and the ECPV in Bilbao. On Saturday, July 18, the first practical test will take place on set in Madrid on one of the Drago BS sets in Boadilla, with a DIT station and Sony X300 HDR Grade 1 monitoring. In the afternoon and on July 19, the day will take place in the post-production room in Sala Contraluz to work with the material in HDR and SDR.

The Barcelona and Bilbao conferences have not yet been scheduled, although they are expected to be held in September.

This seminar, directed by Juan Luis Cabellos ACS, Jose Luis Pecharroman ACS and Luis Ochoahas the sponsorship of important brands in the sector, such as Arri, Canon, Fuji and Velvetin addition to Drago BS.
