Atomos brings ProRes RAW to Nikon Z cameras

The Nikon Z series gets today’s announcement that its cameras will output a raw stream via HDMI to the Atomos Ninja V for ProRes RAW recording.

We’ve been waiting to see how ProRes RAW is adopted throughout the industry. It may not have had the impact we were hoping for (yet), but it is allowing cameras to gain some pretty cool capabilities. One example is the Panasonic EVA1, which gains 5.7K of recording capability when processing on the Atomos Shogun Inferno.

We assume that like the previous EVA1, that the raw recording will be at 10-bit color depth, but we’ll know more as the days progress, so we’ll keep an eye on it. There is also no information on an actual release date for the functionality.

This is an interesting announcement as it shows how cameras are now gaining capabilities beyond their initial specifications. It may also be much needed, as more cameras get better internal recordings with high bit rate and high bit depth, external monitors/recorders need to find a way to maintain their place in the market. Raw capabilities like this are one way to do that.

In a further announcement, both Nikon and Atomos have teamed up to produce the Z6 Filmmakers Kit, which includes the Nikon Z6 and Ninja V recorder, along with a lens, gimbal and two batteries for which there is also no pricing information yet.
