Atomos launches Spyder, for color calibration

Atomos, manufacturer of the renowned Ninja-2 and Samurai recorders, launched its new calibration tool a few days ago. The release of Spyder comes to the market as expected after its presentation at IBC last September.

Spyder is intended for screen calibration to industry standard color specifications, providing users with the assurance that they are viewing what has been accurately recorded for an efficient production process.

The included software has been developed in collaboration with Datacolor and allows calibration of the Samurai Blade at the touch of a button. Thus, this recorder/monitor gains the ability to calibrate to the SMPTE Rec 709 color space, with the D65 white point at 100% gamut, and of course, remains fully customizable after this process. Although initially Spyder is working with Samurai Blade, it will soon be implemented in other Atomos recorders.

Key features include USB to LANC serial control for automatic calibration and user adjustments in lift, gamma and gain per channel after initial calibration, and can also be used as a standard calibration unit on any monitor or computer (Datacolor software is required and can be purchased from the Datacolor website).

The Windows compatible version of Atomos Spyder is now available for a price of 109€. (The Mac version is still under development). Priority will be given to pre-sales orders and general orders can be placed through Atomos resellers worldwide.
