Atomos Ninja Assassin

Atomos, the company behind such popular monitor recorders as Shogun and Ninja, has just launched the new Ninja Assassin, which expands the line of the same name with qualities such as 4K UHD and 1080 60p.

The Shogun recorder is still the company’s most advanced product, but shares some of its qualities with the Ninja Assassin. While the screen size and resolution (1920×1080, 7 inches with 320 ppi), scopes and most of the recording capabilities are the same, we will have to forget about the 12G/6G/3G SDI connections, RAW recording, Genlock and balanced XLR audio connections.

This recorder has been designed for cameras such as Sony a7s, Canon XC-100 or Panasonic GH4, which limit their recording to MPEG or H.264 at 420. Thanks to the Ninja Assassin, these restrictions can be avoided by achieving 4K or HD recording with 422 sampling, 10-bit depth and using the ProRes or DNxHD codecs.

These are some of its most outstanding features:

  • Playback and editing functions.
  • Weight reduction by 10% (430g).
  • HDMI video and audio connections.
  • Anamorphic de-squeeze.
  • Monitoring tools such as Focus Peaking Assist, 1:1 and 2:1 Zoom, False Color (for skin tones), Zebra, waveform and vectorscope for image analysis.
  • Pre-Roll cache recording function, up to 8 seconds in HD and 2-3 seconds in 4K.
  • Timelapse with up to 10 different sequences, speed ramps and the possibility of programming the start and end for more than 24 hours.
  • 3D LUTs with image comparison possibilities in a 50:50 Split.
  • Tagging function (up to 10 tags) during recording or playback modes.
