Autodesk launches FBX Review for free

During SIGGRAPH 2013, Autodesk surprised us by announcing the launch of a free application for 3D asset review from mobile devices.

It is FBX Review, a standalone software that allows 3D artists and animators to visualize 3D models, environments and character animation in detail, streamlining the process for decentralized teams.

Although initially developed for devices running the Windows 8 operating system, it is also compatible with Windows 7 and can be used either mobile or as a desktop application.

This lightweight tool has a complete set of functions for visualization, with options for shading, animations, cameras and lighting through the Microsoft DirectX window. Among its main features we find:

  • Static and dynamic tessellation.
  • Displacement and vector displacement maps.
  • Animation and deformation of skins.
  • Real-time shading maps.
  • Reflection maps.
  • Light and ambient occlusion maps.
  • Image-based lighting.
  • Ambient color of the earth and sky.

To perform the relevant evaluations, there are easy-to-use controls that allow you to scroll, play and pause animations and scenes or take different camera angles.

Autodesk has also wanted it to be a flexible application and no other 3D animation software is needed for its operation. Thanks to the support of a lot of open 3D file formats, ranging from the most popular .fbx, .3ds and .obi, to other more specific ones such as .dxf ( AutoCAD‘s own); the freedom for everyone to use their preferred 3D systems is achieved.

Autodesk FBX Review is now available for free in the Windows Store for Windows 8 mobile devices and as a desktop or tablet application on Windows 7 and 8. You can also download it from Autodesk Exchange.

For proper operation, 50 MB of disk space for installation and 4GB of RAM are required. For optimal viewing, mobile devices should include a Microsoft DirectX 11 compatible graphics card.

In addition, Autodesk mentioned the possible development of iOS and Android supported versions, although they are only considering it at the moment.

On this page you can see all the features of FBX Review in detail.
