Autodesk has announced today the changes that will be in its new version of Smoke. Possibly the news that has caused more impression is the incredible reduction in price, going from $15,000 to $3,495. The second big news is that it will now be a much more accessible system for editors, as it has been completely restructured with this goal in mind.
In this way, Smoke has gone from being a very expensive software, practically inaccessible to some, to being a much more affordable and simple high-level post-production system. According to them, this new restructuring has been done with the intention that Avid Media Composer and Final Cut Pro users will be able to understand it without spending too much effort.
Thanks to these new features in Smoke it will be possible to edit, perform color correction, visual effects and complicated compositions, both online and offline.
File and project management is handled through a new Media Hub, which allows users to work with native formats from ingest through editing to effects creation.
ConnectFX is a powerful tool based on a nodal system, dedicated to perform complex compositions within the same timeline on which it has been edited.
In addition to this, other tools have been added for compositing (“Action for true 3D”), color correction (“Colour Warper”), chroma keying (“Master Keyer”), stereoscopic 3D, editing and effects.
The system requirements to run Smoke on Mac have also been lowered. It will be able to work on laptops, iMacs and 12-core Mac Pros.
Autodesk will release a demo in June, but Smoke won’t actually be available until 2013.
