Blackmagic Design acquires Fusion software

IBC attendees were surprised to see Fusion software on the Blackmagic Design booth instead of the Eyeon booth. That’s because the company has acquired it, so it now has two very powerful post production systems (along with DaVinci Resolve).

Fusion is a compositing, visual effects and motion graphics system that has been on the market for 25 years and has earned a great reputation among its users. Like DaVinci, it has a nodal system and uses CUDA technology to power the GPU. In addition, its latest version accepts DNG files (a perfect fit to work with Blackmagic products).

Due to Blackmagic’s track record of buying other systems, many users are concerned about the future of Fusion. Both companies have assured that this decision will lead to better development and support of Fusion, and Eyeon will continue to support its users and develop VFX solutions.

Knowing that a high-end system could be made available to a much wider audience than is currently the case, the guesswork has begun. According to some, the first thing Blackmagic will do will be to keep the business as usual system (in fact, they have already released version 7.0), followed by a few minor updates until, (they estimate at NAB 2016) a completely revamped version appears that will look a lot like Resolve and will have seamless roudtrips between the two software. In addition, it is also feared that in the midst of these changes a price reduction will be made.

Version 7.0 combines everything you need for motion graphics and visual effects in a single application. It includes advanced tools for compositing, painting, rotoscoping, tracking, color correction, particles, keying or titling. Multiple renders can be combined in a single project to render different aspects of the same scene. It is also possible to import geometry from other applications or create your own elements from scratch; all in a 3D environment capable of handling millions of polygons with complex shading.
