Blackmagic releases firmware 1.8 and DaVinci Resolve 11

Blackmagic Design has officially released firmware version 1.8, a unified update for the original Blakmagic Cinema Camera (BMCC), the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera and the Blackmagic Production Camera.

The company has preferred to release some features instead of waiting to develop all the features they announced and have them working properly, so v1.8 does not have everything users expected.

Even so, this firmware comes with a new code base for all three cameras that improves their performance and includes a user interface similar in design to that of the URSA camera, announced during NAB.

The most anticipated improvement has been support for CinemaDNG RAW recording on the 4K Production Camera.

New debayering algorithms have been added to the BMCC, incorporated from the DaVinci Resolve system. For this same camera, dynamic range has also been improved when shooting at 1600 ISO.

Lens support is now more extensive on the Pocket Cinema Camera (including image stabilization or lenses without on/off buttons for image stabilization). Moreover, lens control has been improved for EF-mount cameras. This means that users will be able to obtain autofocus when pressing the focus button on EF lenses or focus peaking when pressing the focus button twice.

Other features such as audio meters and histograms will be released later this year.

Firmware version 1.8 is now available for free download from Blackmagic’s support page; as well as public beta 11 of the DaVinci Resolve color correction system (about which you can read all the news in this post).

Don’t forget that in a few days the DaVinci Resolve course will start and on July 7th will be the advanced DaVinci Resolve course.
