Canon announces the new EOS C200

Canon announced this week the new EOS C200 camera, positioned between its already popular C100 and C300 MK II.

It seems that one of the few reasons that places it between the two models just mentioned is its name, since it has an important advantage, the sensor of the C700. With this 4K Super 35mm CMOS and some new features, the C200 would be a cheaper camera than the C300 MK II (which also shares the same sensor) but with many of its possibilities.

In terms of design, it is very similar to the other members of the C series, although the top is somewhat flatter. It weighs 1.4Kg and features the same main controls, as well as WiFi and Ethernet connectivity. The XLR connections have been moved to the camera body (instead of being on the handle).

It has a 4-inch OLED viewfinder with touchscreen, designed to be able to mark focus points simply by touching with a finger. It also features face detection and a Dual Pixel autofocus that covers 80% of the screen.

The processor is a Dual DIGIC DV6 and allows different recording options, including 4K UHD/50P MP4 and Full HD at 120fps. It supports raw recording internally, in a new format (yes, another one) called Cinema RAW Light, defined by the company as “a format that provides the same flexibility in color correction in a smaller size“. That is, it has a reduced data rate, allowing users to capture RAW material internally on CFast cards.

These 4K RAW files can reach up to 30fps and have 12bit and 1Gbit/s, although if we go down to 10 bit we can reach 60p.

Canon has announced that a firmware update will include the XF-AVC codec.

The price of the new Canon C200 will be 9.229€.
