Canon has introduced two new models in its EOS lineup, the 5DS and 5DS R cameras, which come with the highest resolution in the company’s DSLR market. Both feature a 50.6 megapixel Full-Frame CMOS sensor and Dual Digic 6 image processors.
The vast majority of their features are common, in fact, the only difference between them is that in the 5DS R the low-pass filter has been removed to take full advantage of the sensor’s potential and produce images with more detail.
It is possible to record with the full capacity of the sensor or choose one of the cropped modes, which offer 30.5 megapixels in 1.3x mode and 19.6 megapixels in 1.6x mode. These options will be reflected in the viewfinder with a mask or a line. And speaking of the viewfinder, it is the “Intelligent Viewfinder II”, capable of displaying a customizable selection of camera settings such as exposure, white balance, AF modes, etc.
Like many other Canon cameras, these allow recording in 1080p up to 30p, or up to 60p if we lower the resolution to 720p. Thanks to the new “Time Lapse Movie” function, users can capture a series of still images that are automatically combined into a video file, with the intervals programmable from one second to 99 hours, 59 minutes or 59 seconds, and the number of possible shots from 2 to 3,600. In addition, continuous recording up to 5fps is also available for the realization of fast cameras.
The new Canon models have two slots for CF and SD memory cards, including Ultra High Speed (UHS-1) SD cards.
Other highlights include autofocus, with 61 AFs of which 41 are crossfocus; improved stability thanks to reinforcements in the camera’s physical design and mirror vibration control; and an advanced AE system (as in the 7D Mark II) that detects and compensates for light source flicker through the shutter.
Within the automatic white balance you will find the settings “Ambience Priority” or “White Priority”, for tungsten lighting situations.
Finally, a quick screen control has been added to change settings and customizable functions.
The Canon EOS 5DS and 5DS R are scheduled to go on sale in June for estimated prices of $3,699 and $3,899 (camera body only) respectively.
