Canon introduces new Sumire Cinema Prime lenses

Canon has just announced the Sumire Cinema Prime series, a range of seven prime cinema lenses, all with an interchangeable PL mount, which can be modified to an EF mount.

The new lenses are:

  • CN-E 14mm T3.1 FP X
  • CN-E 20mm T1.5 FP X
  • CN-E 24mm T1.5 FP X
  • CN-E 35mm T1.5 FP X
  • CN-E 50mm T1.3 FP X
  • CN-E 85mm T1.3 FP X
  • CN-E 135mm T2.2 FP X

After eight years, Canon is finally making premium cine lenses with a PL mount.

According to Canon, the new Sumire Prime full-frame lenses feature a completely new optical design. They have been designed to have a “softer” look that allows them to create a more organic-looking image. Canon claims that the Sumire lenses subtly modify the textural representations of the human face and offer a delicate nuance when the aperture approaches its maximum setting during shooting. This unique optical design results in solid, natural image reproduction, bringing stunning image quality and warmer tones to film productions.”

The 7 lenses provide cinematographers with richer levels of rounded bokeh for a better impression of subjects and softer light rays, perfect for creating intimate shots that direct the viewer’s attention to specific details.

Sumire prime also features phosphorescent indicators so you can see the mark in the dark.

Price and availability

The Canon Sumire Prime lenses will cost $7,410 USD per lens.

The 24mm, 35mm and 50mm focal lengths will begin shipping in July, and the 14mm, 20mm, 85mm and 135mm will be released between August 2019 and January 2020.
