Canon opens up to the world of monitor calibration

Canon has announced its new monitor calibration service and other brands of monitors.

With HDR work becoming more and more common in new productions and the products that Canon has implemented for such a workflow, all that was missing was monitor calibration. It is a service that the brand will provide for all types of monitors in professional, simpler or cinematic productions.

The advent of 4K also makes it increasingly necessary a more accurate image control and that is why Canon wanted to offer its Canon Calibration Service. It offers a fully customizable calibration program depending on the type of calibration you want to perform. The Canon team travels to the studio or location where you want to carry out the calibration of the monitor either once or continuous monitoring.

During the calibration process, several key points of the monitor are measured, including white point, grayscale, luminance, gamma, and primary and secondary colors. Each of these points is adjusted to match professional industry standards SMPTE, DCI and ITU, as well as each production’s own needs.

The ISF (Imaging Science Foundation) certified equipment is capable of “performing calibrations on any type of display technology,” Canon claims. Everything from consumer-grade PC monitors to high-end professional monitors can be adjusted to bring out their full potential. The calibration process is complemented by a report containing pre- and post-calibration results.

It remains to be seen how this Canon service is received and whether it competes with CalMan, for example, one of the most powerful services in the world of calibration.
