Canon has announced a firmware update for its EOS C100, C300 and C500 cameras, as well as for the Cinema RAW Development software.
The new feature that will affect all three models is a new ability to move an enlarged area when using the Magnified Focus Assist function. Thus, users will be able to check focus across the entire viewing area either in the viewfinder or on the LCD monitor.
EOS C300
The new firmware adds Push Auto Iris and One-Shot Autofocus (AF) automatic functions, both of which are highly requested by users of this camera and built into the EOS C100 that was released in November last year. They will be especially useful for those who do not have the support of an assistant, helping them to adjust exposure and focus.
A new recording mode has also been added (for the C300 and C300 PL) in 1440×1080 at 35Mbps. This specification extends the versatility of the XF codec and is intended for broadcast applications, where bandwidth requires less transmission time while maintaining a high level of image quality.
These new features are expected to be available from October 2013.
EOS C500
Canon has revamped the Cinema RAW Development software supplied with the EOS C500 for processing, playback and export of Cinema RAW 4K material.
With this update, scheduled for June this year as a free download, greater compatibility with the ACES (Academy Color Encoding System) workflow will be achieved. Thanks to the new support, it will be possible to export clips in an ACES Open EXR format via the Input Device Transform function, which will generate the processed files from the C500 and C500 PL.
This will allow for more efficient workflows using a uniform color space, even when working with video from multiple cameras and the resulting color differences.
A function has also been added that will allow you to specify in and out points before processing or copying RAW material.
Throughout 2013 Canon will be releasing these updates, available from this page.
