The Spanish company Cinemartin has just released version 4.0 of Cinec, its file conversion and encoding system.
The star new feature is support for 8K DCI (8192×4320), making Cinec the first video conversion system capable of handling this resolution. In addition, it is the only software so far that can output H265 up to 8K in 422 10 bit.
Thanks to its scaling tool we can scale (for redundancy’s sake) virtually any file between SD and 8K, including for example 8K footage from Sony F65 or 6K from RED Epic. It is possible to upscale clips from e.g. 1080p to 4K, 6K and 8K, or downscale from 3840×2160 or 4096×2160 to 1080p and many other variations.
In this update, Cinemartin has decided to improve the HEVC H.265 codec, adding VP9 as an alternative. VP9 is an open format developed by Google that aims to respond to H.265 with greater efficiency than HEVC.
According to the company, this format revision allows converting from 500MB to 200KB with no appreciable difference. The image below is an example of this, converted from a 46-frame TIFF sequence at 545MB to an H265v3 at 24fps weighing 271KB. (Examples of the original TIFFs can be downloaded at this link ).
Other added features include LUT import, logo overlay, SPLIT function and support for 8 CPU cores.
