Cinema Libre projection system

Last week saw the announcement of the Sony SRX-R515 projector, which was presented for installation in small to medium-sized venues. Now the ITA (Independent Theatre Alliance) has partnered with JVC to supply a new projection system called Cinema libre.

With the same purpose as Sony, and competing with them in the process, this system has been created to enable independent cinemas to replace 35mm projectors at an affordable price.

Cinema Libre will be able to offer 4K resolution, thanks to the JVC D-ILA projector, and includes a DCI-compliant server.

ITA represents and meets the needs of about 100 small theater owners, and they believe that by the end of 2013 the majority of films (produced in the United States) will be made in digital format. Therefore, they saw the need to create a system that was easy to use and that theater owners could afford, since soon they will all have to face the adaptation process.

Several manufacturers were evaluated, but in the end they settled on JVC and their 4K projector because of its color response, clarity, resolution and lack of pixelization. After testing it in a large number of commercial theaters, they claim it delivers the brightness needed for cinematic projection.

Unlike the Sony projector, which will be released in November in Spain, the Cinema Libre system is already available through ITA. Neither company has made clear the price of these projection systems, so we will have to wait a while to have more information and see which of the two is established, or if competitors continue to emerge.
