A few days ago Codex Digital announced support for Canon Cinema Raw on its Onboard S recorder.
Codex is a developer of digital recorders and media management systems, whose flagship product is the Onboard M, mainly characterized by being the first to achieve Arri certification to record Arriraw from Alexa. In the same way that at the time they worked together with Arri, and in order to stay ahead in terms of formats and digital cameras, they have now collaborated with Canon since the first tests of the C500 and C500PL.
The Onboard S recorder is more compact, Arri certified and now, thanks to this advancement, with support for Canon Cinema RAW. In addition, it also allows recording in HD with or without compression, and embedded audio and metadata.
If we are working with the C500, the Onboard S allows us to record raw files at 4K up to 120fps. If what we want is to capture our images from an Alexa, it can record up to 60fps in 16:9, and up to 48fps in 4:3. For this, it uses 240 or 480GB solid state drives.
Codex Onboard S can record on a single channel via 3G-SDI, although there is also a dual channel option for high-speed footage, or even two channels (stereo or two separate cameras). You can see all the specifications here.
This video shows a tour of the cities of London, Berlin, Miami and Los Angeles. The images were captured by the new Canon EOS C500 4K and recorded with Codex Onboard.
