Today we present Dehancer OFX, a set of tools for simulating color gradation similar to analog film. Dehancer has a suite of OFX tools and plug-ins that help to treat color in a way similar to how a real film would behave. This is not a LUT, it is a more complex set of tools based on analog processes that have been accurately measured over the last four years.
This package is the result of many years of work, study and experience in the field of analog film. A work of film shooting, darkroom work and with a scientific point of view, result in this plugin, where Pavel Kosenko, the project manager has put at the service of Dehancer his knowledge in photography, color science and film laboratory.
Among the long list of tools that we can find in Dehancer OFX, we can highlight some of them as CMY Color Head. A tool that simulates what in analog was the subtractive color correction used by many enlargers based on 3 color filters yellow, magenta and cyan. This technique nowadays can remind us of printer light. Within each tool you can adjust the color and exposure parameters.
Another of the tools that can be found in Dehancer is Bloom. We could pair it with what is commonly known as Glow, however on the dehancer page they explain the difference between these two terms that are so similar but still have their differences. It is an effect that used to appear at the edges of image areas with high contrast when brightness is dispersed. Dehancer, by means of a mathematical model, has managed to develop this tool to control and create this bloom effect that in analog film depended on the optical system, filters and film used.
Another tool that is widely used today in color correction is grain. Dehancer differentiates between film scan grain generation and computer-generated procedural grain. In the case of Dehancer they have used procedural grain. This is the result of much study and experimentation with film, darkroom prints and scans to get the perfect 3D mathematical formula to simulate analog grain and for people to customize it to their liking with 5 parameters.
In Dehancer OFX we can find up to 53 movie profiles. In this article they tell us exactly how they get these profiles. The list expands from time to time and keeps growing with each update.
This plug-in is available for DaVinci Resolve color correction software and the Mac operating system. Specifically since DaVinci Resolve 15 version you can work with Dehancer. System requirements are Mojave 10.4 and later and Metal-enabled GPU. The Dehancer OFX toolset costs $349.
