Dolby Vision IQ

In recent months we have been seeing how HDR is being imposed in the day to day of audiovisual production and consequently in the consumption of it, so we find new standards that are coming to market: Dolby Vision, HLG, HDR10+ … and now it seems that Dolby Vision has worked on a new HDR display standard in televisions, the Dolby Vision IQ, although only in those that are compatible. It is an evolution of the already known Dolby Vision and is focused on smart TVs.

With the new HDR televisions, the way the viewer consumes radically changes and Dolby Vision IQ aims to further improve this experience. With Dolby’s new proposal we can reach higher brightness levels, passing 4000 nits and a color depth of 10 bits. We will have to see if with Dolby Vision IQ we will reach the theoretical 10,000 nits of Dolby’s first proposal as well as the 12-bit depth.

Why will Dolby Vision IQ be available only on compatible televisions? The IQ system is based on a calculation of the light levels in the room where we are watching the content. These light levels are measured thanks to sensors that TVs must incorporate to analyze the ambient light. As with Dolby Vision, the metadata is used by the television to adapt the content to the brightness of the room.

In this way, it will no longer be necessary to change the TV settings, since, being a dynamic analysis, the light varies continuously to always offer the best brightness levels at all times without having to enter the menus.

At the moment there are two brands that have joined the Dolby Vision IQ technology to incorporate it into their new Smart TVs. We are talking about LG and Panasonic, and we will have to see if new brands join this way of consuming content. On the other hand, it should be remembered that many smart TVs are working to launch the filmmaker modea mode that offers to visualize the content in the most faithful way to how it was delivered and we will have to see how both display modes interact.
