As expected, Sony has released its firmware version 2.0 for the F5 and F55 cameras, as well as for the AXS-R5 recorder.
This update comes with over 30 new features and enhancements, many of which have been requested by users. Most notable are the HFR (High Frame Rate) capabilities, which allow capture at 120fps, 180fps or up to 240fps in 2K Raw when using the AXS-R5.
It is also possible to use this mode with the XAVC HD codec (up to 120fps) for internal recording on SxS Pro+ cards, and can even record in 2K Raw and XAVC HD simultaneously.
With the 3.0 update (expected in December), the XAVC HD is expected to reach 180fps and the Slow and Quick (S/Q) functions will be introduced, allowing specific frame rates to be dialed up to the maximum speed.
To finish with XAVC, 2048x1080p resolution recording has been enabled.
Another high spot on the list of new features goes to exposure tools. The cameras now feature histogram, vectorscope and waveform in the viewfinder and SDI outputs, as well as support for the “false color” function in a DVF-EL100 OLED viewfinder or DVF-L700 monitor. This function requires a free monitor or viewfinder upgrade, available from the Sony Service Center.
All four SDI ports have been enabled, making it possible to control EI and LUT modes separately for the secondary outputs, which means that you can monitor with a LUT while recording in S-Log2.
The secondary display has also benefited from some changes, displaying more information, allowing control of the EI value and MLUT on/off, and with expanded direct configuration items.
The recently released XQD memory cards, capable of writing at speeds of up to 168MB/s, can now be used with the F5 and F55. However, an SxS to XQD card adapter will be required.
The rotary dial can now be used to adjust audio levels. Support for the Fujinon Cabrio series of lenses and Sony SCL-Z18x140 zoom lenses has also been added, with Iris control and REC trigger.
