Firmware update for the Odyssey 7Q

Convergent Design has released the first official firmware update for its Odyssey 7Q recorder Odyssey 7Q recorder. Important features have been included, some of them highly requested by users.

ProRes 422 HQ

The highlight, without a doubt, is the addition of ProRes 422 HQ to the list of supported codecs and recording modes (up to 30p).

Sony FS700

In addition, if we have the Sony FS700 option, we will be able to record in Raw 4K (up to 60p), as opposed to the originally announced 2K, and convert from these files to ProRes HQ in HD (1920×1080).

This capability supports Rec.709 and Slog2 color profiles. Normally, the FS700 outputs an 8-bit signal through the SDI and HDMI ports; Odyssey’s new conversion takes the original 16-bit Raw and converts it to 10-bit in ProRes, generating a richer format than that obtained in-camera.

Canon C500

The new firmware also includes several new recording modes for the Canon C500, giving support for Raw QHD (3840×2160) up to 60p, Raw 2K up to 30p, 2K at 12-bit and HD at 12-bit 4:4:4:4 up to 30p in DPX.

New functions on the screen

The OLED screen also has some new features. One of them generates a window of movement around the frame (“Pixel Zoom”) and another one allows to automatically rotate the screen, although the latter can be overridden so that it is not annoying.

Reference marks have also been added to the waveform, histogram and False Color, as well as the 1.33 guides.

Other improvements

These are the rest of the added functions and improvements:

  • SSD file mixing (RAID, Non-RAID, RAW, ProRes, etc.)
  • Audio meters
  • Headset volume control
  • Function to hide the video.
  • Clean SDI output (no overlays)
