Firmware version 6.0 for VariCams

Varicam 35

Panasonic has announced a free firmware update for its VariCam 35 4K and VariCam HS cameras.

This would be firmware version 6.0 and consists of several improvements and added functionalities for both image and sound:

  • Support for data recording on the new B expressP2 series of cards for 4K and HFR (High Frame Rate) content. These cards provide faster read and write speeds and increase capacity to 512GB in addition to the standard 256GB capacity.
  • It is now possible to display the viewfinder and SDI viewfinder outputs with different color settings.
  • In-camera color corrections can be applied nondestructively to reproduce them, so that LUTs and CDLs designed for V-log material can be displayed.
  • Color files generated in-camera can be saved separately on SD cards (until now they were saved as a file stored together with the media).
  • ProRes HQ codec now supports 1080/60i/50i
  • Compatibility with the AJ-WM50 wireless module (from Panasonic).
  • In the case of using the AU-VEXT1G extension module, the camera indicates a recording error if there is a signal interruption between the camera head and the recorder.
  • The image quality in the V-709 MAIN mode has been improved.
  • The WFM can be displayed in “YGBR”.
  • An area marker indicates which part of the image is enlarged when using the “EXPAND” mode.
  • There is a new 2.201:1 aspect ratio indicator that can be superimposed over the image.
  • Beep sounds can be played at the start and stop of recording.
  • The audio volume can be adjusted via the menu dial.
  • There is a new function (“USER SW”) that directly opens the audio volume display.
  • For ease of navigation and control, “Audio Setting” and “Output Setting” have been included within the same menu area.
  • The “Look Around” functionality now allows you to select whether you want to look above or below the captured image.
  • The name of the item “FLIP FLOP” has changed to “IMAGE INVERT”.
