Grass Valley announces Edius 7

Grass Valley has announced Edius 7, the latest version of its editing software aimed at both broadcast and post-production environments.

This system has the ability to work in real time, without rendering, even when dealing with 4K material. It now runs natively at 64-bit on Windows 7 and Windows 8 (64-bit) operating systems and takes advantage of the installed memory (up to 512 GB, depending on the Windows version) for maximum performance in complex operations such as 3D or multi-layer editing in 4K.

Its timeline has no track limitations (audio, video, titles and graphics) and accepts any combination of SD, HD, 2K and 4K resolutions in real time, increasing editing performance as CPU power increases (although it has been optimized for multi-core systems and fourth-generation Intel Core i processors).

Edius already had extensive support for several Grass Valley products, but with this update the company has decided (listening to the requests of its users) to open up to third parties including support for DeckLink 4K Extreme (PCIe) and UltraStudio 4K (Thunderbolt) capture and playback devices, both from Blackmagic Design. In addition, hardware from Matrox and AJA Video Systems is scheduled to be supported during the last quarter of this year.

This version also improves the 4K workflow, improves performance with MPEG and H.264/AVC material, works faster with large file streams (JPG, TGA, DPX, etc.) and adds support for the latest codecs such as XAVC, XAVC S and AVC-Ultra.

Other new features include a new “Gaussian Blur” filter and an automatic function to detect program updates.

Edius 7 will be launched during the third quarter of 2013 and will be demonstrated publicly in mid-September at IBC. It will be available in two versions; Pro, aimed at the independent professional, and Elite, for editors working in collaborative and networked environments. The Elite version features the integration of the GV Stratus tool and Grass Valley K2 media and storage servers, allowing files to be recorded directly to K2, have multiple workstations and edit live while ingesting.

As for upgrades from other versions, the company has only announced that users who have purchased Edius Pro 6.5 (or hardware packages that included it) from June 1 onwards will be able to get Edius 7 for free. The price for the rest of the upgrades will be indicated when the distribution starts.
