LaCie introduces a portable RAID disk

LaCie has introduced its 4TB “Rugged RAID“, which brings RAID 0 and RAID 1 storage options to its line of portable hard drives called “Rugged“.

True to its name (which in Spanish means robust), it has been designed to withstand a drop of 1.5 meters and resist a crushing of a ton of pressure. In addition, its case makes it much more resistant to dust and water stains.

Its main connection is the Thunderbolt cable, which works both to move data from the drive and to bring power to the unit. It also has a USB 3.0 port, but this is not capable of being the power cable, as its 5 watts are not enough to run the two included disks, interfaces and hardware RAID controller.

According to the company, with the “Rugged RAID” we will be able to reach speeds of 240 MB/s. As we have already said, we have two storage options, in RAID 0 to take advantage of the full capacity of the disk (4 TB) but with little protection, or in RAID 1 (also called mirrored), which reduces the storage capacity by half but ensures that if there is a failure in one of the disks we will not lose any data.

The new LaCie model is expected to arrive later this quarter for a price of $450. You can read all available information about the drive here.
