Latest updates for ARRI Amira

ARRI announced yesterday the latest software updates for its AMIRA cameras, SUP (Software Update Packet) 2.0 and 3.0, which make it possible to record with new codecs and resolutions.

Both versions enhance the overall feature set, making Amira an even more versatile camera.

Amira SUP 2.0

This update is scheduled for March and its most prominent feature is the unlocking of 4K recording. Although it is enabled by the new software version, to activate it, it is necessary to purchase a 4K UHD license from the “ARRI License Shop“.

Once installed and activated, we will be able to record in ProRes 4444 (and other minor codecs of the family) in Ultra High Definition (3840 x 2160) directly on CFast 2.0 cards, at speeds up to 60fps.

Detail and sharpening or de-noise tools are available to optimize image sharpness.

Other added features include:

  • 3.2K recording, allowing compatibility with Alexa cameras with SUP 11.0 installed (available for download now).
  • Support for Wi-Fi remote control.
  • Ability to monitor audio channels individually.
  • Additional locking functions to prevent accidental button presses.
  • Speed settings from the “pre-record” mode.

The second update is scheduled for mid-2015 and enables the capture of MXF files using the MPEG-2 codec at 422 and at 50Mbit/s. This feature has been added with the aim of bringing the camera closer to the broadcast formats of broadcasters, speeding up workflows in broadcast environments due to file compatibility directly from the camera. In addition, storage is reduced and, therefore, subsequent archive systems will require less space.

A new audio accessory will also be launched; a slot on the back of the camera body, which will equip it with a portable audio tuner/receiver. This will allow signals to be received wirelessly from the sound mixer-recorder or directly from the microphones, to capture audio in-camera but without cables.

Other features include:

  • Support for Super 16mm lenses.
  • A versatile remote control interface for multi-camera productions.
  • An intervalometer function for time-lapses
