Leica’s new SL2 comes with 5K video

Leica announces a new model of its full-frame mirrorless camera, the Leica SL2. Leica SL2 with significant improvements over its previous SL model.

We start by mentioning the ergonomics and design of the camera, as they have incorporated changes in the design while maintaining the essence of the company. The changes in the structure improve, with an extremely solid metal body covered with leather that makes it resistant to moisture and dust.

The mount is L-type to work with SL and TL lenses, although Leica R, S and M lenses can also be used with an adapter. A 3.2-inch, 2.1-megapixel touchscreen has been added to the rear of the body, while the OLED viewfinder has 5.76 megapixels. Various functions can also be accessed from the rear via the joystick and touch panel.

The new SL2 model shares the same sensor as the Leica Q2. It is a 47.3 megapixel sensor to which they have added the Maestro III image processor. With this set we can obtain 14 stops of dynamic range and an ISO of 100 up to 50,000.

The video options improve with the possibility of recording at 5K 29.96 frames per second at 8 bits, although with an external recorder can reach 10 bits of color depth. As we increase the fps the format varies, being able to record in 4K at 60 fps and in 1080p can reach 180 frames per second. In the world of photography it is capable of capturing snapshots at 14 bits in RAW, DNG and JPG.

They have improved the autofocus system, now faster and with the option of intelligent AF that varies automatically depending on the movement of the shot to prioritize the focus or shutter release. Image stabilization is achieved by adjusting the sensor to compensate for camera position.

Also designed for immediate connection, it features Bluetooth and Wi-Fi to connect to the Leica app and comes with HDMI, USB 3.1 C and 3.5mm jack ports for audio input and output.

The new Leica SL2 will be launched on November 21 for 5,990€.
