Lightworks at IBC

IBC ended yesterday with a lot of news and presentations of the latest technologies in the industry. Among them was the Lightworks editing system (from EditShare), which was shown for the first time in Amsterdam on the three main platforms: Windows, Mac and Linux.

In addition to support for these operating systems, the company revealed new features it has been developing for the software.

The first thing we will see are the changes in the user interface, with new indicators in the timeline and the ability to fully customize the appearance, modifying the scale, brightness, font, window colors, text, columns, subcolumns, selection or adding an image as wallpaper. In addition, the interface can be scaled to support Retina displays.

Multi-camera editing has been improved, including a simple panel for synchronizing clips together, as well as automatic group synchronization. It will now be much easier to make all editing modifications, such as swapping a clip in the timeline for another clip in the same group, dragging and dropping clips or using keyboard shortcuts. A function that automatically creates a random edit from a synchronized group has also been added.

For the free version of Lightworks we also find the new “Curve Color” effect, an option to export MOV files with the DNxHD codec (additional license of this codec is required) and improvements in the Key Assignments panel.

And there are some other new features that can only be enjoyed in the Pro version, i.e. the paid version:

  • Support for all AJA I/O devices, including the Io family and the SD and HD cards, KONA LHi (Mac and Windows only).
  • Screen capture recording.
  • Option to export to Youtube from any of the three platforms.
