LMD-A monitors, the new LCD series from Sony

A few days ago Sony introduced its new LMD-A series of monitors. Characterized by being multiformat Full HD, they join the range of professional LCD monitors.

The company’s main idea for their development has been a lighter and thinner design than previous models. Although the screens are larger, the three new monitors are 30% shallower and lighter to facilitate portability and use in mobile units.

All of them have LCD screens, although they differ in size and resolution, as well as other more specific functions.

  • LMD-A240: 24 inches, 1920×1200
  • LMD-A220: 22 inches, 1920×1080
  • LMD-A170: 17 inches, 1920×1080

A number of operational improvements have been added in this series:

I/P conversion with low latency

The signal processing for this interlace-to-progressive conversion has been automatically optimized according to the format of the input signals, with low latency of less than 0.5 field (except LCD pixel response time). This capability will allow users to avoid having to constantly change settings and provides efficient, real-time video monitoring during live productions.

Monitor display function with the TSL UMD protocol

The new monitors support the TSL UMD protocol, provided by Television System Ltd. The IMD (“In-Monitor Display”) functionality displays the two tally indicators together with dynamic text information received via the Ethernet connection.

The text can be placed at the bottom or top of the screen, as well as the IMD (although the latter only on the LMD-A240), to avoid interfering with the video images.

There is also a new feature that provides support for European language symbols such as accents and umlauts, among others.

Other features

It is also possible to monitor multiple video sources seamlessly by accelerating source switching, facilitating comparison between multiple sources, in addition to color verification and camera updating.

All three models are compatible with ITU-R BT.709, EBU and SMPTE-C standards, and have two SDI BNC inputs and two SDI BNC outputs.

Sony offers optional mounting brackets for the A220 and A170 models. There are also screw holes on the edges for installation on mounting yokes and a protection kit is available for the LMD-A170, which would reduce damage in the event of shock in transport or general use.

Power consumption has been reduced by 20-30% compared to previous monitors, and they have the ability to be powered from a DC source for outdoor use.

Other features include a waveform monitor, vectorscope, audio level indicator and a camera focus function.

All three monitors are designed to be used both in the studio and on location. The A220 will be available from February, but the other two models will have to wait until March.
