Logarithmic profiles for Canon DSLRs

Atomos is promoting a set of logarithmic profiles designed to extend the dynamic range of Canon’s popular DSLRs. The company is calling it an “HDR upgrade for Canon DSLRs,” as the increased dynamic range in these cameras also expands the ability to use them in conjunction with its HDR-ready Inferno and Flame recorders.

Cinematographer James Miller has been in charge of designing these C-log profiles, which come along with a package of LUTs (.cube) called “DELUTS” that complement them. The profiles (.pf3) include one called “CLOG Neutral” and another called “CLOG 3”, the latter defined as “more Canon style”.

Although there is a bottleneck, as the HDMI output only supports 8-bit, the company finds advantages in the ability to capture material without as much compression, such as in ProRes files, and with these logarithmic profiles.
