Editing by sharing projects and media on Avid systems has never been cheap, being only profitable for large companies with many stations with several editors in the same production or several productions in parallel sharing resources.
The Avid Unity system was the main option, which later evolved into the ISIS network storage systems under the Avid Interplay framework. As alternatives to the Avid products, the EditShare and Facilis TerraBlock systems appeared at a lower cost, but for an indie editor or a small production company with a couple of editing stations they were still very expensive. It must be said that these solutions include storage hardware, server and software to manage their functions.
3 years ago, the development of a software called xMcore in its beta phase, initiated by a post-production company with several Avid editors who were looking for an inexpensive solution for networking. It could be installed on a computer configured as a stand-alone server in a network of editors or also on an editing station that would act as a server at the same time. Well, now that the beta phase is over, this software has its first commercial version called VidSharX.
VidSharX is a software that allows you to share Avid projects and media without having to pay a high price. It works on an Ethernet network at speeds of 1G or 10G depending on the hardware we have in our network. There are three licensing options, depending on the number of editing stations connected to the network, starting from the lowest for 2 editions to the highest for 25. At the moment it only works on MAC, although I have asked the developers and they have told me that they will make a version for Windows but they do not have dates yet.
