Lumix S1 and S1R, the new full-frame mirrorless cameras

The new Lumix hit the market. Lumix S1 and S1R: let’s take a look at the details of these exciting new full-frame cameras from Panasonic.

The range of full-frame mirrorless cameras is currently divided into two models, the S1 and the S1R: the former has a sensor containing 24.2MP, while the latter boasts 47.3MP. The S1 is the model that is more focused on the video segment of the market, while people who work mainly with still photography will probably find the S1R more appealing, although both are capable of recording 4K video at 50 / 60p and Full HD up to 180fps.

Other differences between the two are that the S1R, with its higher pixel density, can go up to ISO 25,600, whereas the S1 can go up to ISO 51,200. Both models feature a “High Resolution Mode” for still images, which combines information from eight exposures using the image stabilization system that makes microscopic compensation adjustments. This results in the S1taking RAW images up to 96MP, while the S1R can shoot at a staggering 187MP .

Video recording

Both cameras can record video to SD cards or Sony-designed XQD cards via two card slots. CFexpress support will come at a later date.

Panasonic has noted some limitations on recording times depending on the mode you are using, due to sensor temperature regulation. It says that 4K / 30p and Full HD can be recorded without a time limit, however, in 4K / 60p it is limited to 29 minutes and 59 seconds, while high-speed modes (e.g. 180 fps) are limited to 15 minutes of continuous recording.
