4K, UHD, BT 2020, DCI, P3, ACES, HDR, HFR, enough! We are going to run out of acronyms at this rate, but what is all this 4K hullabaloo and what is around it? If these are your doubts, here you have more than 100 pages to clarify everything.
A few months ago I was talking to myself about these questions and I thought: why not make a document explaining all these things in a “simple” way? Anyway, between my work coloring movies and running the company 709 I think I have a little time left between two and three in the morning…
But if that was a good idea, it got even better when I decided that such a great work could not be charged for, but that we were going to let them download it for free, Robin Hood style. After all, who needs the vile metal? Don’t take it literally, eh?
Now getting serious, I believe that this is an essential document at the present time since there is nothing that gathers all the information and comes from a reliable source (and even less in Spanish).
The thing is that as I was getting into it, the thing was growing more and more, because you can not start explaining what is the gamut 2020 without first having told … I do not know, what is a gamut, for example, and so on, so that the thing quickly got out of hand. And this is where my good friend Paco Utray (sorry to call you Paco instead of Francisco, it’s the trust) professor at the Carlos III University and collaborator of 709 comes in. Paco is one of those people who are always willing to get involved in new projects and he liked the idea of the 4K guide from the beginning. He has contributed to the contents, carried out an essential work of selection, synthesis and writing and has taken care of all the details. Without his work this guide simply would not exist.
We decided to release the work after Nab 2015 in order to wait for the news that it would bring. So once we finished the structure and contents our graphic designer Cristina Simón took care of giving it the final shape, color palette, graphics, and final layout. Basically it looks beautiful thanks to her 🙂
We have been fortunate to be able to count on the help of many professionals for the writing of this guide. Some have actively participated by writing chapters and others are simply always there as a source of knowledge related to 4K or any other audiovisual technology. Many thanks to Damian Ruiz, Julio Gómez, Fernando Alfonsín, Rafa Roche, Pol Turrents, Daniel Perez and Fernando Muro.
Well, and now that I have told you who has made the 4K guide, it remains for me to explain what the 4K guide is, right? Well, it is a reference guide not only about 4K resolution but about everything around it: color spaces, dynamic range enhancement, temporal resolution etc. Not only do we talk about the “pure and simple” 4K stuff but we also explore terms that are often linked such as RAW, log curves, rec 709, ACES, etc.
Once the concepts were defined, we talked about most of the current equipment for both capture (cameras, external recorders, monitors…) and postproduction (Mac and PC hardware, editing programs, color correction, effects, film projection, etc.) We talked about the current standards of 4K DCI in digital cinema, UHD for television and H265 broadcasting over the Internet.
All this from a technical but also informative perspective. We have not wanted to make an engineering document but something that can be used to explain the doubts we all have about these new technologies. Something that is deep enough to give us security in our decisions but that does not go beyond what we are going to have to use on a daily basis.
The 4K 709 guide has a Creative Commons license that allows its free download and distribution. However, it may not be used for profit (directly or indirectly) and any public use of the content must reference the authors.
As you can imagine the 4K guide is in its version 1.0 and logically will be updated as technologies and equipment change and of course according to the contributions that you make to us. So we ask that instead of sending the pdf to your colleagues and colleagues pass them the download link on our page, this way you will always have the latest version of the 4K guide available.
You can see the 4K 709 Version 2 Guide from this new section.
I hope you find it very useful. And if you find it as practical as we do, don’t forget to spread the word!
UPDATE: 4K 709 Guide Version 2 is now available!!!! In it you will find updates on HDR, cameras, codecs, etc.. And to have it always available we have made it online, this way you will always be consulting the most updated version. You have the access here and the tables of codecs and 4K cameras in high resolution you can continue downloading them from our download section. Let’s share!!! [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
