Last week AJA increased its 4K workflow capabilities by launching the new Ki Pro Ultra.
It is a recorder and player half the width of a rack and weighs 2.5kg. In addition, it comes with a built-in handle for easy carrying.
The company said they have designed it to fit perfectly with a second rack-mounted unit next to it.
Functions and features
The Ki Pro Ultra allows capturing images in ProRes up to 4K resolution (4096 x 2160) and 60p speed. However, if we want these conditions we will have to have one of the Pak1000 disks (from AJA), which have a capacity of 1TB and support up to ProRes 422 HQ.
If we stay at lower speeds, up to 30p, we can achieve ProRes 4444 using any of the Pak discs.
On the left side we will find two slots for SSD disks, which provide a total recording capacity of 2TB, or what is the same, about two hours of 4K 60p (13 hours of HD).
A function allows that when the first disc is full, it automatically switches to recording on the second disc.
In addition to 4K, the Ki Pro Ultra can support these other resolutions:
- Ultra HD (3840 x 2160)
- 2K (2048 x 1080)
- HD (1920 x 1080)
On the right side we have some controls, a knob, a headphone jack and volume control for audio monitoring.
Beneath the 4.8-inch HD LCD screen are navigation controls and a “Slot” button for switching between discs.
Connections
One of the Ki Pro Ultra’s strengths is the large number of connections:
- Four 3G-SDI inputs and outputs
- Two-channel fiber input and output
- HDMI 2.0 input and output
- Timecode and ref loop input and output
- Input and output for eight analog and AES/EBU audio channels
- RCA stereo output
- Two 12V-18V inputs for power supply
- One LAN port for web-based UI control
- One RS-422 port
- SDI monitor output that can also be used as a converter to HD signal.
This recorder is now on sale for $3,995. Pak1000 discs are priced at $1,495, although there are also Pak512 for $1,295 and Pak256 for $695.
