This week Atomos began distribution of Ninja Starits pocket-sized recorder introduced during NAB.
Intended primarily for extreme sports, reality or quick recordings requiring low weight, the Ninja Star is capable of recording files in ProRes (4:2:2 10-bit) and features an HDMI connection.
Undoubtedly its best qualities are its size and lightness, measuring only 9.4cm wide, 5.8cm high and 2.3cm deep, and weighing 230g with batteries (130g free).
In addition, it has timecode and trigger for recording start and stop, along with audio input.
The company has set a price of $295 (€219), thus aiming to reach the masses but without neglecting the professional sector. However, the CFast 1.0 cards it uses can be as expensive as the recorder itself. They are available with capacities of 64 GB ($159) and 128 GB ($239), for about 80 and 160 minutes of recording, respectively.
The package also includes a 1/4″ and 3/8″ plate, CFast USB 3 reader, battery (5 hours), charger and car adapter. The camera mount adapter is sold separately.
