As you know since a few versions ago Avid (Media Composer, Symphony and Newscutter) is able to link to the different types of files instead of generating its own media (importing them). This feature is done through what Avid calls AMA (Avid Media Access), the peculiarity is that the different AMAs are plugins developed by different companies to integrate with Avid. This means that Avid does not have to release a new version every time a new camera or codec appears, making the update much easier.
Version 6 of Symphony and Media Composer offers AMA for almost all types of files (video, audio and graphics) but it must be said that many of the AMA plugins are not included as standard with Avid, but must be downloaded from a website (this is the same in version 5.5). The reason is that when downloading them we make sure that we are downloading the latest version of the plugin.
In this line Avid has released new plugins to better support the Red Codec of Red Epic and the new MXF in DNXHD that the Arri Alexa is able to do:
-ARRIAMA AVID AVID MEDIA COMPOSER V5.5 and 6 OSX.
-ARRIAMA AVID MEDIA COMPOSER V6 WIN.
-ARRIAMA AVID MEDIA COMPOSER V5.5 WIN.
I have taken these last links from the fantastic article that Javier Lomas has published in his blog “Diario con Red One” and I recommend you to read it.
