I had always felt a healthy envy towards those who, knowing programming, were able to design complex DCTLs in DaVinci for different uses. And not only that, but many of them, after programming them, would share them for free with the community.
Well today, thanks to ChatGPT, Claude and AI in general, I have been able to start that small professional challenge that I had for a long time. Obviously, I still have almost no programming knowledge (if any at all), but I am taking the first steps on this incredible path, assisted by AI.
Clearly, I will never be able to compare myself to those who do have this knowledge, but at least I can start to obtain simple results. And the ratio between these results and the time spent today is worth it for me, especially considering how long it would take me to learn programming.
And as those I admire and respect do, you can download and use for free these small investigations that I am carrying out in the form of DCTLs. The first ones are quite simple, but little by little I hope to create more sophisticated and useful things, especially because, although I don’t know how to program, I do know what I’m looking for 🙂
I also hope that these DCTLs can help others to embark on this journey or to have more ideas about what can be done with them.
Unfortunately, as I don’t have much programming knowledge nor intend to have any economic return, I cannot provide support for them. I have tested them in DaVinci Resolve 19 and they work on both Mac and Windows, but if you have problems with them in different versions or systems, I won’t be able to help you, sorry.
I’ll describe the first DCTLs that you have in the download area:
Primary DCTL:
Simply an adjustment of “lift”, “gamma”, “gain”, contrast and offset. The contrast is linear, so it can be practical if we have selected in the project that DaVinci’s contrast adjustment is in S curve, allowing us both in the same project, especially in “display referred” color management (YRGB)
Blue in Shadows DCTL
Well, that’s it, for lovers of putting blue in shadows. Just for fun 😊
ACES CDL DCTL
This is perhaps the most innovative of the three. A DCTL that allows you to use the ACES CDL “Slope, Offset, Power” values and saturation through a DaVinci operator. Useful to get used to how these controls work, which do exist in other applications like Livegrade, Baselight… You can also manually enter the values from an external CDL. Unfortunately, even if we use this operator in the first node of Resolve, the adjustments are not exported as CDL, as it is a DCTL, only the LGG and curve adjustments are programmed in DaVinci to travel in CDL form.
As I said, they are all in the free downloads section, and I hope to gradually add more.
Enjoy them!!!
