New features of mirrorless LUMIX S

Panasonic’ s new cameras appear to be direct rivals to Nikon’s Z series, which is really good as far as market choice is concerned.

The initial cameras in the LUMIX S series are the S1R (47MP) and S1 (24MP). We know from the initial September announcement that both cameras are capable of full-frame 4K video at up to 60P, and come equipped with a dual IS system. But new features have been unveiled that complete our view of these products.

Both cameras feature a‘High Resolution Mode‘. This works by taking 8 consecutive images while panning the sensor. The cameras then process these images and ‘synthesize’ them into a single image using Panasonic’s new Venus engine. However, Panasonic is still a bit coy about what this means in practice.

The HLG photo mode allows photos to be taken with a much wider dynamic range. Apparently, the photos are saved in an “HSP” file format, which can then be read and played back by the latest generation ofHLG-compatible Panasonic 4K TVs via HDMI.

We know from the initial release that both cameras utilize the new L-Mount developed by Leicawhich covers full-frame and APS-C sensor sizes, with lenses designed to be fully interchangeable on any camera using the mount.

The LUMIX S1R and S1 are scheduled to be available from the end of March, which just happens to be just before NAB. In the meantime, Panasonic has produced a short teaser video that gives a small taste of what the cameras are capable of from a still image perspective.
