Schneider Optics has begun manufacturing and distributing an innovative in-camera filter system for ARRI Alexa. Working in conjunction with Clairmont Camera, the developer of this system, they have designed interchangeable filters intended to sit on the front of the Alexa’s CMOS sensor.
The included filter holder has been specially designed, replacing the light deflector on the camera. Once in place, it allows precise positioning and secure mounting of the filters.
The standard kit contains:
- Filter holder with protection ring.
- All necessary supplements, to accurately compensate for the resulting focus shift behind the lens filter.
- A filter installation tool
- A Clear filter to be used when no filtering is desired, to maintain focusing accuracy.
- Six IRND filters: .3, .6, .9, 1.2, 1.5 and 1.8.
All filters are high efficiency and multi-layer to minimize reflections and ghosting. In addition, this kit is also available without filters so that the user can choose and purchase only the ones he/she needs.
It is compatible with most PL lenses, but not Zeiss T2.1 16mm, 24mm, 32mm; Arri Macro 16mm, 24mm and 32mm; as well as Cooke Series II and III 18mm, 25mm and 32mm. Lens extenders may also interfere with kit filters.
Clairmont Camera says that the high sensitivity that characterizes Alexa (600 ISO or higher) makes the use of neutral density filters particularly important. In addition, Schneider Optics has already anticipated that they will release new filters for the kit, such as a Black Frost.
