New firmware for Cinema EOS family

A few days ago Canon announced important new features for its Cinema EOS family, which will affect the C100, C300, C500, EOS-1D C, and even the XF300 cameras.

The most outstanding feature has been the increase in maximum ISO (in the first three models mentioned above), which can reach up to 80,000, as opposed to the previous 20,000.

Several functions have been included for those working on studio productions:

  • DCI-P3+ mode: shares the same white point as DCI-P3, but has an extended gamut that exceeds the limits of P3 for better color reproduction.
  • Canon Cinema Gamma: a new color space, the widest available (between Rec709 and DCI-P3) in the Canon family.

  • ACES output: allowing to output a 2K signal that conforms to the ACES color space to facilitate this workflow.
  • Additional LUTs: in addition to the existing Rec709 and Wide DR, support for a DCI-P3 LUT has been added.
  • Expanded high-speed options: giving the ability to record up to 120fps in “Half Raw”, which is captured at 4096×1080 and then interpolated to a 4096×2160 image. A new “4K1K” will allow Raw to be captured at 120fps in a cropped vertical resolution of 4096×1080, generating an aspect ratio of 3.79:1.

New features have been added to further encourage fast recording anytime, anywhere:

  • Wide Gamma DR: was first introduced in the C100. This “Wide DR gamma” mode is designed to retain highlights while maintaining good skin tone. This gives you a dynamic range similar to Canon Log without the need for extensive color correction treatment.

  • Push auto iris” and “one-shot AF“: functions also seen for the first time in the C100. They add to the ease of operation for fast, single-operator shooting situations.
  • Improvements in the magnification function, with 25 zones to move around the image and check focus.

Features have also been added to this camera, including the ability to communicate electronically with the new Canon Cinema Primes lenses and adding audio level input to reinforce the existing microphone level option.

Other updates allow two users to simultaneously use WiFi and support for GPS geotagging, as well as an improved navigation menu on the C100.

These new products will be released in November for the C100 and C300, and in December for the C500. For more information, please see the official press release.
