New firmware for Panasonic VariCams

Panasonic has announced new free firmware for its VariCam 35 and LT cameras and VariCam HS high-speed camera.

This update includes additional ProRes codecs and HD-SDI monitor output enhancements. Specifically, the added ProRes family codecs are 4444 XQ, 422 and 422 LT for 2K and HD resolutions on the VariCam 35 and LT. However, those with the VariCam HS will have to settle for HD resolutions if they want to enjoy this enhancement.

Exclusively for the VariCam LT, AVC-LongG G50/G25 (HD only) recording capability has been added at most frame rates.

Regarding HD-SDI monitor output, users can now shorten the delay to two frames. There is also new support for output in 23.98PsF and for “Letter Box” in 4K/2K, so that the image in “MON OUT” is automatically adjusted in “Letter Box” mode.

They have also released a new app for remote control via the iPad, called VariCam ROP, which has a display similar to the camera menu.

Finally, the 2.0:1 aspect ratio has been added to the framing markers.

These updates correspond to version 7.0 for the VariCam 35 and HS, and version 5.0 for the VariCam LT. All of them can be downloaded via this link.
