In May, RED took a big step toward streamlining and simplifying its camera lineup. Only the sensor now differentiates the camera. The body is the same for each product. This means they all have essentially the same processing power, and all can run RED’s IPP2 color pipeline in-camera. More importantly, it means it’s now easy to specify and choose a camera, depending on whether you need Monstro (Vista Vision 8K), Helio (S35 8K) or Gemini (S35 5K) with extra low-light performance). But that’s not the only new feature from the RED team.
Enter the DRAGON-X
There is a new camera called DRAGON-X, which now also features a DSMC2 form factor and electronics. It features the same DRAGON sensor technology that has been the basis of several previous (and award-winning) RED cameras, but combined with a new processor board capable of supporting IPP2.
It will also achieve transfer rates of 300 MB/s and will record simultaneously in REDCODE® RAW and Apple ProRes or Avid DNxHD or DNxHDR.
IPP2 requires more powerful processing than previous cameras that have featured the DRAGON sensor.More computing power and better image pipelining should result in better images, even with a stable sensor. The new camera has an impressive 16.5 stops of dynamic range and 5K resolution up to 96 fps, with 120 fps achievable at 5K 2.4: 1.
The DRAGON-X was not the only RED announcement… It also brought with it Red Production Module. But if you want to know more you have more information here.
