New Neon monitors for 4K work on set and in the studio

Neon wants to revolutionize the creative process in the HDR and Dolby Vision world. Through its new system, it is able to record and playback HDR images in real time on any monitor that supports Dolby Vision. For cinematographers, editors, focus pullers and DITs, it becomes a fundamental tool to make decisions faster and closer to the expected final result without the surprises of post-production.

Neon has four monitors of different sizes, the largest being 55 inches, the smallest 15 inches and two others in between of 24″ and 31″.

Neon uses Dynamic Atom HDR technology based on a dynamic backlight system with 512 lights (in the case of the 55″ monitor). Important for daylight recordings, it offers a contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1. According to Neon, the black is more authentic than in an OLED monitor thanks to its combination of LED and LCD. They allow up to 15 stops of dynamic range and reach up to 1000 nits.

Real-time Dolby Vision playback is possible thanks to the integrated recorder, capable of recording 4kp60 and HDp240 Apple ProRes RAW, Cinema DNG and Avid DNx images. This recorder is detachable with the idea of being able to replace it in the future for 8K shooting.

The four monitors, each designed for a role in the workflow of a shoot, connect via Bluetooth to the mobile app to control all monitors remotely. With the AtomOS app for iOS, you can control peaking, zooming, pull scopes or even select a LUT (.CUBE). Another of the options that the application allows is the inclusion of metadata to facilitate and streamline the work between the set and postproduction, such as the selection of the good shot, annotations within the shot, etc… From the application you can also connect the Neon monitor to other HDR-compatible TVs or monitors to adjust the color profiles automatically and view the images in HDR.

We will have to see how the industry uses this set of monitors, which have arrived to change HDR productions.
