New Panasonic LUMIX S1 gets V-Log with paid upgrade

Since the LUMIX S1 Full Frame mirrorless was announced, Panasonic clarified that this paid upgrade would be available soon for those interested in getting more video features than those already available on this model. The S1, which of the two recently introduced cameras, the LUMIX S1 and S1R, is the more video-centric of the two, already has an impressive list of specifications, but the paid upgrade will take it to a whole new level.

At this time, the LUMIX S1 comes with a 24.2-megapixel (35.6 mm x 23.8 mm) full-frame CMOS sensor that provides, according to Panasonic, “wide dynamic range and excellent performance with high sensitivity, plus a natural yet sharp image thanks to sufficient light condensation per pixel.”

The LUMIX S1 records video in 4K 60p and allows full pixel signal readout in 4K 30p / 25p to save really beautiful images. The camera records video with a designated gamma curve compatible with ITU-R BT.2100, and you can now choose the Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG) option in Photo Style.

Panasonic has not disclosed pricing yet, but it is already known that this new upgrade will provide the LUMIX S1 with the ability to obtain the V-Log curve like the EVA1, along with other highly demanded features, 4:2:2, 10-bit, 4K, 60p and HDMI output.

The inclusion of the V-Log brings it up to the level of Panasonic’s professional camcorders, in models such as the popular EVA1, and shows us, unequivocally, what the company’s intentions are. While there are rumors that a new micro 4/3 model is in development, the Lumix S1 is designed to work in tandem with the EVA1 and similar camcorders.
