RED has released its new DSMC2 Brain update that unlocks 6K recording for the Dragon-X. The new firmware update enables resolutions of 6144 x 3160 at 75 frames per second and 6144 x 2592 at 100fps.
The DRAGON sensor was very well received by the DOP community as it allows data transfer rates of 300MB/s in both ARRI RAW and Apple ProRes or DNxHR. Dragon-X also features IPP2 which enhances workflows and improves color management, allows for more detail in shadows and more accurate mid-tones, etc…
When Dragon-X was released, the camera’s working resolutions were 5120 x 2700 (5K) at 96 fps maximum, and increasing the frame rate to 120 allowed recording at 5120×2160. With this update, the 6K limitation is unlocked and users will be able to enjoy “cinematic 6K images on a 35mm sensor,” according to the company.
To enjoy this new update simply replace the firmware version with the new version v.7.0.3 and once installed we will not be able to recover v.7.0.2. Unlocking 6K is certainly an added value to the product, but it also incorporates new improvements that a priori go unnoticed. They have managed to eliminate the HD-SDI output error caused by the V-Lock IO Expander module, for example.
The new DSMC2 is compatible with accessories from RED and various manufacturers. It also allows remote camera control, wireless peripheral connection, etc.
The new update is now available on the RED website.
