Last week Sony announced the PXW-FS7 II camera, an advanced version of the existing and popular FS7, which comes with a variable electronic ND filter, E-type lever lock and a redesigned arm to more easily configure settings.
It seems that the most prominent new feature is the variable electronic ND filter, which allows the density to be adjusted in a range of 2 to 7 stops, and presets can be selected with 1/3 stop precision. When used in manual mode, ND filter adjustments are smooth and without any visible steps. It can also be used in automatic mode, in which it works similarly to an automatic diaphragm, changing the exposure according to the illumination, but without changing the depth-of-field characteristics.
Another major change has been the E-type lever lock, designed to more easily change lenses and reduce the chance of dropping them. This is due to the twist of the locking collar rather than the lens itself to remove it, and because the mount now requires releasing a double latch.
The entire ergonomics of the camera have been redesigned. For one thing, the microphone holder and viewfinder are now held by the same type of clamp, so that their positions can be interchanged. In addition, the microphone holder has been improved with a new rubber material that reduces mechanical noise, and a longer rod can be used between the microphone and viewfinder.
The card slots have also been modified, so that the cards are further away from the camera body and easier to remove. In addition, this model allows recording on XQD cards, which can be up to 256 GB, allowing about 45 minutes at 4K 60p.
Following user feedback, part of the button configuration has been changed and a green LED power indicator has been added.
Last but not least, support for the BT.2020 color space has been included.
It should be noted that this camera is not intended to replace the current camera, nor will there be discounts for the older camera, which will remain available in a body-only version. The original lens kit will be available for purchase separately.
The new FS7 II is scheduled to go on sale in January, for an estimated price of about $10,000 (for the camera body), or $13,000 with a kit that would include 18-110mm zoom lenses.
