The Blackmagic company has announced a new converter for displaying HDMI images at 8K and HDR. The new Teranex Mini allows you to adjust the monitors to which it is connected through the calibrators of the main brands on the market. In fact, this converter is compatible with the monitor announced two days ago by Apple, the Apple Pro Display XDR.
One of the main features of this converter is the possibility of having two indicators on screen, being able to choose between the waveform monitor, the histogram, vectorscope or chromatic components. Where this converter really wins in the monitoring of 8K signals, in fact it is presented as a perfect model for any type of audiovisual production. It is perfect for working with DaVinci Resolve in 8K projects, as the machine will suffer less by not pulling so much GPU and CPU, because it is the converter that generates the LUTs.
It is presented as a perfect model for all types of productions, from live broadcasts to feature films or even multi-screen events. With the Teranex Mini you can display signals from different monitors that are connected to a mixer, such as the ATEM Constellation 8K. It also allows you to split the same 8K signal across multiple screens, making it a perfect tool for multi-screen events.
Another great potential is its support for HDR formats. The standards supported are ST2108-1, ST208, ST425 and ST2082-10, depending on the type of metadata transfer to be used: PQ and HLG formats, static or dynamic HDR metadata, etc… REC709, Rec. 2020, and DCI-P3 color spaces are also supported.
The inputs available on the Teranex Mini are many and varied. It has four 1G SDI connections for HD, UHD and 8K signals and four HDMI inputs with four outputs for 8K TVs. On the front it has a USB port in case you want to calibrate monitors. Internally it is capable of converting 8K signals to an optimal definition for HD or UHD displays. Other signals also supported are SDI 3G level A and B and SDI YUV and RGB SDI formats. For audio monitoring it has a high fidelity output and on the front monitor it has vumeters to display the audio signal.
As mentioned before, the converter itself can generate 3D LUTs based on the standard 33-point three-dimensional conversion tables on the market and two custom ones that can be loaded and selected from the front panel.
On the official Blackmagic website you can check the recording formats supported by the converter, but we anticipate that it includes formats from 720 at 50 frames per second to 4320 8K at 59.94 fps.
It is easily manipulated from the controls on the front, from which you can access the menu and the different monitoring options. However, it also has an application for remote operation through the program for Mac and Windows with an ethernet connection.
The new Teranex Mini SDI to HDMI 8K model will not be available for sale until October.
