Next week, on July 1 and 2, the Baselight Online Course for Avid 4K will take place, where the latest version of the renowned editing system Avid Media Composer will be used.
The v8.4 was released just two days ago, of which it is worth mentioning the possibility of creating projects with customized resolutions, being the minimum size 256×128 and the maximum 8192×8192. For those of you who work in s3D and want to make a project of this type, you must take into account that the height must be divisible by 4 and the width by 8.
This version adds a new feature to the timeline called “Quick Find”, which allows us to perform quick searches through the timeline with different filtering options. Also included for the timeline are adapters, which indicate with a T, an S or a C whether the clips have temporal, spatial or color changes (respectively).
As for the user interface, we will see that we can now vary the size of the “source/record” monitors, making one much larger than the other or even activate the “Show Single/Dual Monitor” option (within the Special menu) to have only one of the two.
You will notice another change in terminology, as all AMA functions will now be seen as “Link”. And in the “Link” settings we can change the default input format, choosing between “Pillarbox/Letterbox”, “Center Crop”, “Center Keep Size” or “Stretch”. In addition, there is a setting that allows you to view SD clips in 16:9 directly.
As almost every time there is an update, there is new native support; in this case for Sony XAVC-I (with the Sony AMA plugin) and ProRes 2K, 4K and UHD.
In addition to the aforementioned features, here are some of the other new features added in the 8.4 update:
- Alpha channel support in QuickTime DNxHR files.
- Maintain the source frame rate in transcodings of HD and SD projects.
- Changes in color terminology; old RGB and 601/709 are renamed “Do not modify, treat as legal range” and “Scale from full range to legal range”.
- Remove color adapters from a sequence.
- Refresh the sequence with the new “Refresh Sequence ALL” button.
- Subtitle display on all monitors (source, recording, pop-up) and on the D-track.
- Including AAX factory presets used in ProTools in MC’s “Audio Track Effects” and “Audio Suite Effects”.
- Option to add inactive audio tracks to the export.
- Monitor four audio channels.
- Support for AMD FirePro W7100 and w8100 GPUs.
